AEC: Governments Integrations or Community Integration

The target agenda of ASEAN Economy Community (AEC) 2015 is getting closer to be accomplished. AEC envisions some key characteristics: (1) a single market and productions base, (2) a highly competitive economic region, (3) a region of equitable economic development, and (4) a region fully integrated into the global economy. These have been adopted since 2007, at the 13th ASEAN Summit in Singapore.

All leaders of ASEAN member countries is committed to build the regional integration in order to face the more challenging global economy competition. As a matter of fact that the United States and some Eurozone members are now facing the economy crisis due to their economy control failure, AEC may be a substantial option to empower its regional potential power. In accordance with European Union, a strong regional integration we have known, the AEC areas of cooperation include human resources development and capacity building; recognition of professional qualifications; closer consultation on macroeconomic and financial policies; trade financing measures; enhanced infrastructure and communications connectivity; development of electronic transactions through e-ASEAN; integrating industries across the region to promote regional sourcing; and enhancing private sector involvement for the building of the AEC. In short, AEC will also recognise the free movement of goods, services, investment, skilled labour, and free flow of capital.

With those target agenda, AEC, however, should not only become a commitment among the leader of each member country. In the future, it is the citizens of each country who will run and also get the impacts of AEC goals.  As the target completion is getting closer, social promotion of this project is ultimately needed. Not only the governments but every citizen; the rich or the poor, the elder or youths, men or women must get the advantage of this great vision.
